2026
Known as Te Whare Hui Ora “wellbeing through connection” the new stadium is a space where movement and shared experiences bring people together, nurture relationships, and build a sense of belonging and community support.
A shared agreement between Matamata Piako District Council, Matamata College and the Ministry of Education mean the stadium will support both education and community use. This partnership reflects a commitment to long-term wellbeing and sustainable operations in Matamata.
After several years of planning BOON joined the project to work with stakeholders, refining the design to achieve a buildable concept alongside an effective business case for the sustainable future operation of the facility. We then worked with lead contractor Fosters Construction in a Design and Build contract to deliver detailed design and construction of the project.
The new building includes a double court gymnasium, versatile indoor space, and essential amenities like changing rooms and storage. Located on the grounds of Matamata College, it aims to enhance local sports participation, improve health outcomes, and provide a positive social impact.
The new facility is designed to be multipurpose meeting both community and Matamata High School’s needs while adhering to the Ministry of Education building standards. The new facility has allowed for the relocation and orientation of their sport fields, a new carpark, fencing upgrades, garden bed design, and pavement treatments creating a much more accessible and safe facility to operate.
Two ineffective gymnasiums were removed to make way for the new facility that addresses several local challenges, including low indoor sports participation and an aging population, while also serving as a hub for community activities. By bringing more recreational opportunities to Matamata, the hub will help to improve people’s quality of life and attract new residents.
