BOON and Spotswood College identified a need to develop a specialised technology centre to facilitate the integration of different learning areas and to encourage an interest in technology among the students well before they come on board.
The existing Technology Block at Spotswood College was designed and built in 1960 to fit the old Ministry of Education curriculum which included School Certificate woodwork, engineering, shop work technical drawing, cooking and sewing courses. The project Control Group recognised that with good design and construction the creative adaption of the existing buildings would achieve excellent accommodation for the 21st century needs of the new technology curriculum.
The end result was a combination of modern learning spaces, complimented with adjacent breakout and shared learning spaces with transparency to allow easy observation. All this was complemented with good acoustics, thermal insulation and quality lighting.
