With top-quality facilities, and efficient, collaborative operating models the Tūparikino Active Community Hub will be a catalyst to boost activity and wellbeing and equitable access to recreation across Taranaki.
BOON as lead design consultant has been working together with our partners through a highly collaborative co-design process together with Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa, Ngāti te Whiti and Ngāti Tūparikino. This major public project in Taranaki is one that touches almost all demographics of the community and is unique in the way it brings all peoples from all communities of interest together.
Multiple hui and complex stakeholder co-ordination has seen the successful engagement and inputs from mana whenua, community participants, sporting codes, existing and potential future users. The project has progressed to a settled staged master plan and concept design for use in funding applications. The hub will be much more than a quality community sports facility. It will be a community space for all, supporting learning and health, celebrating mana whenua identity and upholding sensitive environmental principles.
Key landscape design drivers for the project are:
– Enhance the existing Pukekura Park entries and extend the path network to connect the hub with park and city connections.
– Retain and enhance sight lines from Maunga Taranaki to Te Tai O Rehua the Tasman Sea.
– Perforate the site edge with multiple access points for greater connection to the surrounding community.
– Utilize landscape features to support water management including ground water recharging swales and systems to enhance biodiversity and limit piped water runoff.
The planned vertical infrastructure of the project includes an extension to the existing TSB stadium to support the vast growth in community indoor sport participation, as well as a strong events program in New Plymouth, and a central pavilion to support the addition of new artificial turf and recreational activity on the inner track.
